4 Eco-Friendly Packaging Materials

4 Eco-Friendly Packaging Materials

Check out these great options for sustainable packaging

I do a lot of shipping – both products and gifts, and I’m always looking for better ways to package items in environmentally friendly ways.

Ideally, I want to use anything that can: a.) Be recycled or…  b.) Will decompose faster in the landfill – just in case it doesn’t get recycled on the other end.

I mail my large products in boxes made from recycled paper whenever possible.

For wrapping delicate things, I still like tissue paper for its smoothness. It’s less scratchy on delicate items like handmade candles and it looks nice.

My in-box stuffing is usually scrunched up paper sheets or biodegradable peanuts (see below) instead of bubble wrap or plastic air pillows. As everyone knows, once the bubblewrap or air pillows are popped, all you have left is plastic sheets – not much good for anything after that really.

Envelopes. I’ll always choose paper over plastic envelopes with the item inside wrapped with paper or thin cardboard for protection.

4 Sustainable Packaging Materials

1. Honeycomb Cut Paper

A few weeks back I received a package that was wrapped in something I’d never seen before. It was incredible! It was made from brown kraft paper with a honeycomb cut and lined with white tissue. Very nice looking and completely made of paper!

Not only does it work great as a protective wrap due to the natural cushioning from the honeycomb-cut, but it gives a nice first impression when the box is opened.

You can find it in large quantities or small. It also comes in different colors. If you’re someone who ships lots of products, or just an individual who would just like to “up your game” when it comes to reducing your shipping footprint, here’s where you can get it on Amazon.

You can view this at Amazon.  Click here for the link.

2. Biodegradable Packing Peanuts

Pretty much everyone hates styrofoam peanuts especially if they get loose! And it takes loads of patience to put them in a bag or box (especially when trying to get the statically charged nuts out of your hair and off your hands – lol!)

Although there is some debate over how long styrofoam peanuts take to breakdown – some say 100 years, some say 500 to 1000 plus years – it is agreed that styrofoam does not break down for a very, very long time.

If you’re really into peanuts, here’s a great alternative. These shipping nuts are made of organic starch and they melt in water. They are also FDA compliant and leave no toxic waste. Plus, they’re static free – yay!

You can view this at Amazon. Click here for the link.

3. Brown Kraft Paper

There are loads of uses for plain brown wrapping paper. It’s inexpensive too.

You can buy rolls of brown paper at many grocery stores in the school supply aisle, dollar stores, crafts stores, and even at the post office. OR you can also recycle any paper bag for wrapping packages to be shipped Here are 3 uses:

Covering Marked-up Boxes. Brown paper is perfect for wrapping marked up boxes.

Sometimes I need to ship something to a friend but the only boxes that I can find are covered with old labels and writing all over them. Just wrap the shipping box in brown paper like you would a gift (except use packing tape instead of scotch tape), add your label, and you’re off to the post office.

Paper Patterns. I enjoy sewing but can’t always find a pattern for certain things whether they be clothes, bags, whatever.

I’ll take a favorite worn out jacket or an old purse apart, lay the pieces on a sheet of brown paper and trace them. Then I’ll cut the pattern out of the brown paper, mark it up with notches for alignments, sewing lines, etc. and then pin it on my fabric. It’s just like any pattern that you’d purchase except that brown paper is much thicker than typical thin tissue that most patterns are made of, making it last a lot longer!

Holds Items in Place in the Box.  Scrunch the paper up and pack it around the items to hold them in place in the box during shipping.

You can view this at Amazon. Click here for the link.

4. Paper Egg Crates

Egg crates can be very handy for shipping! Since they are designed to ship delicate eggs, they also work great as protective inserts inside the box.

They are very customizable. You can cut them apart to whatever size you need while keeping the lid attached if necessary.

Place small items (wrapped in tissue) in the little egg cups and close the lid.

Use Egg Crates instead of those plastic “air pillows” to hold your item in place in the main shipping box.

Not only are they light-weight but they can be stacked and stored for use at a later date and, will breakdown quickly in landfills.

Let me know your eco-packaging ideas! I love hearing how other people are using recycled materials in imaginative ways.

The Many Benefits of Coconut Oil

The Many Benefits of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil isn’t just for your skin and hair.

Considered one of the new super foods, coconut oil is known to have hundreds of uses: in the kitchen, for your skin, your hair, and even your pets!

The Benefits of Coconut Oil

  • Studies have shown that people living in tropical climates (where coconut was readily available) who consumed the meat as well as the oil had less heart disease, slimmer physiques and a longer average life span.
  • Coconut oil improves thyroid function, metabolism and liver function.
  • Studies show that moderate or high amounts of coconut oil helped lower cholesterol.
  • A 1987 study concluded that coconut oil protected the body against cancer better than unsaturated oils.
  • It can improve digestion, water retention, and blood flow and decrease risk of blood clots.

Great for Your Skin, Teeth, and Overall Hygiene!

  • Coconut oil’s many uses include being anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-viral.
  • Use all over your body as a moisturizer
  • Can be used as a toothpaste mixture using coconut oil, water and baking soda.
  • It can be a soothing treatment for eczema when smoothed on affected areas.
  • Excellent as massage oil. Use as is or with a drop or two of your favorite essential oil.
  • Apply before shaving to minimize cuts and scrapes.
  • Mix with cornstarch and baking soda for a natural deodorant!
  • Smooth on to relieve nipple pain from breastfeeding.
  • Try a little coconut oil on bug bites and feel the relief.

Promotes Wellness and Total Health

  • Use coconut oil alone as aromatherapy. Massage the coconut oil onto your temples, or the inner part of your wrist, and seek relief from its nutty, earthy scent.
  • Children who get frequent nosebleeds can find relief in coconut oil. Bleeding can arise when the inner nostrils get dry, cracked and bleeding. Apply coconut oil once or twice daily to prevent dryness.
  • To boost up bodybuilding or lean down, coconut oil when used to cook with can boost metabolism and help proteins support muscle mass.
  • Studies have shown that coconut oil helps relieve irritable bowel syndrome.

Cooking with Coconut Oil

  • Coconut oil can be used instead of butter when making omelets, stir fry, casseroles or pastries.
  • Spread a tablespoon on toast instead of butter.
  • Use in a protein shake or fruit smoothie. In its natural form, coconut oil is thick BUT will melt in a matter of seconds so if you use the stove top to melt it in a pan be sure to use the low setting so it doesn’t scald or burn. Microwaving is not recommended – way too hot!  Once melted add it to your favorite protein shake, fruit smoothie, or whatever you want.
  • The perfect natural insect repellent: peppermint oil and coconut oil.
  • Scar healing – Apply to the area to speed up the healing process.
  • Use as a natural ointment for painful back, neck and joint discomfort/soreness.

Pet Health

  • Dogs and cats LOVE coconut oil! Improve your pet’s health by adding a teaspoon to their food or water bowl to support their digestive systems, kidneys, skin and fur. They’ll think it’s a treat!
  • Coconut oil makes pill taking so much easier! It’s a great way to get those tricky capsules or pills into your cat or dog. Just hide the pill or capsule in a big glob of the thick coconut oil and pop it down the back of their throat. Immediately let them lick off what’s left on your fingers triggering the swallow reflex. They’re so busy licking the coconut off of you that they didn’t realize they just got a pill! You’ll never have problems giving them pills again!
  • Perfect for rubbing on doggy’s dry lips. Sometimes the corners of a dog’s lips get crusty. Gently massage it into the dry areas. Of course the dog will lick their lips but in doing so the crusty stuff will come off. Plus, it’s totally safe for the dog to eat!

The Bottom Line

Coconut oil isn’t just for silkier hair and softer skin. For increased health, wellness and in a preventive diet, you can use coconut oil in nearly every area of your life! It’s yet another super food that you can enjoy the delicious taste of every day.

Fragrance for a Peaceful Atmosphere and Happy Vibe

Fragrance for a Peaceful Atmosphere and Happy Vibe

Creating different moods in your home is easy with carefully chosen scents.

Whether it’s in a candle, incense, or aroma sticks, scents can have invigorating or calming effects on the entire household.

When deciding what type of atmosphere you’re looking to create, choose your scent based on the age-old science of aromatherapy.

If you just need to kick back, bathe away your stress, or simply meditate then Lavender, Sandalwood or Vanilla could be exactly what you need. But if you’re having a fall or winter party you’ll want something bold like cinnamon or clove for a warm inviting feeling. For a summer party, perhaps a bright scent like lemon or pineapple to keep your guests happy and chatty.

Keep the following basic essential oils on hand.

You can also find candles or aroma sticks that include these essential oils in their list of ingredients.

Lavender

Breathe in this calming scent and prepare to drift off into a calm, meditative state. Be careful when using lavender scented candles; you may find yourself closing your eyes and falling into a deep sleep. This is never a good idea when a fire is burning in your room – even a small one atop the wick of your candle. Therefore, to achieve the calming effects of the scented candle and still stay safe, burn your lavender candle an hour before bedtime. Snuff it out before you climb into bed. Relax and enjoy the calm.

Eucalyptus

These leaves are good for more than a koala bear’s diet. Eucalyptus is a strong minty scent that helps lessen muscle tension, clear the sinuses and bring about an all-around feeling of alertness. It is often overwhelming in large doses, but in smaller amounts, it can be just the scent you need to feel renewed.

Peppermint

The smell of Peppermint is invigorating and makes one feel refreshed. Studies have shown that students who chew peppermint flavored gum before a test get higher scores. Light scented candles infused with peppermint while you re studying for that next term paper.

Lemon

Decrease your stress level and make any room smell squeaky clean by lighting some scented candles or aroma sticks infused with essential lemon oil.

Sandalwood

Think Zen. This is an ancient aromatherapy favorite and lends a sweet, woodsy scent to the room, bringing those who inhale it closer to the earth and thus closer to true fulfillment.

Vanilla

Bring back visions of home by lighting a vanilla scented candle. A sweet reminder of happy days, vanilla delights the senses. Imagine warm sugar cookies baking in an oven, and you have a good idea of the aroma a quality scented vanilla candle exudes. Make sure you do not pair your vanilla candle with one that is designed to invigorate if you are looking to wind down after a tough day.

Those are just a few of the basic scents to start your essential oil collection with. There are many more on the market today to choose from including loads of designer blends  to cover all of your changing moods.

Watch for more posts regarding the power of fragrance coming soon!

5 Calming Herbal Teas

5 Calming Herbal Teas

The Stress of daily life sure can take a toll.

Sometimes I just need to take a break and reboot my mind back to factory settings. Whether it’s taking a mental break, calming my frazzled nerves, or getting some much needed sleep, a nice cup of the right tea can go a long way to setting me straight again.

Here are some of my favorites when I need a break from this wacky world.

1. Chamomile Tea

One of my go-to gentle calming teas has always been chamomile. Those pretty little daisy-like flowers not only help to calm your nerves and reduce stress, but they can also help to treat insomnia. A cup of chamomile tea before bed has gotten me to sleep on more than one occasion.

Uses: Calming jangled nerves. Insomnia – drink before bed.

How to prepare:

Fresh chamomile: Add chamomile flowers into a pot of freshly boiled water (not boiling) and steep for 5 minutes. Strain before serving.

Dry chamomile: 3-4 tablespoons of dried flowers in 8 ounces of freshly boiled water (not boiling). Steep for 5 minutes. Strain before serving.

Chamomile kind of tastes like fragrant hay to me. If I’m already agitated it’s not going to help calm me down if I’m bumming out on the flavor – lol! So I add a ½ teaspoon of agave sweetener, or 1-teaspoon honey. With a little sweetness everything stays lovely. I pretty much do this with all of them actually.

2. Lemon Balm Tea

Lemon Balm has the reputation of relaxing the body without causing drowsiness. Lemon Balm reduces a stress hormone called cortisol so it’s also very helpful in elevating the mood. Lemon Balm is a member of the mint family so there is a touch of mint in addition to it’s lemony scent and flavor.

Uses: Relaxing the body without drowsiness. Lifting one’s mood.

How to Prepare:

Fresh Lemon Balm: 2 Tablespoons fresh lemon balm in 6oz of freshly boiled water. Steep 5 minutes. Strain before drinking.

Dried Lemon Balm: 1 tablespoon dried lemon balm in 6oz of freshly boiled water. Steep 5 minutes. Strain before drinking.

3. Passion Flower

Another excellent natural remedy for anxiety and stress is Passion Flower tea. It is a gentle anti-anxiety and mildly sedative herb that can be used to induce a good night’s sleep. Passion Flower is known to be a muscle relaxant as well as containing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

NOTE: Pregnant women or nursing mothers should not take this herb. Also, those on blood pressure medication should not consume this herb as it can lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Do not take if using other sedatives.

Uses: Anti-anxiety, muscle relaxant, and sleep aid.

How to Prepare:

Dried, Cut Passion Flower: 1 tablespoon dried passionflower in 6oz of freshly boiled water. Steep 10 minutes. Strain before drinking.

4. Peppermint Tea

I Love Peppermint! There’s nothing like peppermint when you’re feeling stressed out. Because it has a relaxing scent and no caffeine, it makes a very nice tea to drink before bed.

How to Prepare:

Fresh Peppermint: 2 Tablespoons fresh peppermint in 6oz of freshly boiled water. Steep 5 minutes. Strain before drinking.

Dried Peppermint: 1 tablespoon dried peppermint in 6oz of freshly boiled water. Steep 5 minutes. Strain before drinking.

5. Rose Tea

Roses and Rosebuds have been used in tea and medicines for thousands of years. In addition to Rose’s long list of benefits it also helps to reduce stress and anxiety. The calming effects of rose tea are excellent for helping you to sleep well.

Uses: Anti-anxiety and sleep aid.

How to Prepare:

Dried Rose Petals: 1 tablespoon dried rose petals in 6oz of freshly boiled water. Steep 10 minutes. Strain before drinking.

Fresh Rose Petals: Wash petals thoroughly before adding them to boiling water. Reduce heat and steep for 10 minutes until petals turn dark. Strain before drinking.

Bottom Line

As with any relaxing moment you must savor it. Don’t just chug these teas – sip them, enjoy the fragrance, the warmth, and allow yourself to slip into a soothing moment. Put on some meditative music, write in your journal, or just stare out the window.

No matter what you do, be sure to create a space between you and the rest of the world.

Keep your focus on the positive and in no time you’ll begin to feel more refreshed and ready to take on the next challenge with a clearer head and a much better perspective.

Yummy Chocolate, Coconut, Almond Candy Recipe

Yummy Chocolate, Coconut, Almond Candy Recipe

Make this Yummy Chocolate, Coconut, Almond Candy with Health Benefits to Boot.

While traditional candy bars are tempting and satisfying, they are too often filled with artificial flavors and preservatives.

Here’s a chocolate, coconut, almond recipe that sure to satisfy.

BPA-free silicone candy molds are a must for creating candy, and they make serving treats super convenient with no need for slicing.

If you don’t have candy molds, this recipe can also be made in an 8×8 baking pan. Just cover the bottom with wax paper for easy removal.

A dark chocolate base is swapped for traditional milk chocolate, which raises the antioxidant factor. To balance the slight bitterness of dark chocolate, mix some raw honey into the coconut layer.

If you prefer a sweeter chocolate, either start with a semi-sweet dark chocolate and/or stir in a teaspoon or two of honey into the melted chocolate.

Total time: 40 Minutes
Cook Time: 10 Minutes
Prep Time: 15 Minutes
Servings: 12 Bars

Tools

– Mixing Bowl
– 0.5 oz Silicone Candy Molds (BPA-free). Or a 8×8 baking pan.

Ingredients

– 1 cup unsweetened (or semi-sweet) dark chocolate chips
– 1 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
– 1/3 cup unrefined coconut oil
– 2 Tablespoons raw honey
– 12 almonds, unsalted

Instructions

– Start by melting chocolate chips in a double boiler until smooth.

– Spoon one teaspoon of chocolate into the candy molds.

– Place in the freezer for five minutes to lightly set. The chocolate should still be slightly pliable so that when you press the coconut layer on top, it forms to the chocolate.

– Reserve the remaining melted chocolate in the bowl for later.

– Combine the unsweetened coconut flakes, raw honey, and melted coconut oil into the mixing bowl, and stir well to moisten. The coconut oil acts like a glue, binding the chocolate and coconut layers.

– Spoon the coconut mixture over the chocolate layer in the molds, and gently but firmly press to form.

– Dip the backs of the almonds into the reserved chocolate, and set one on top of each bar.

– Place back into the freezer for 15 minutes to completely set.

– Pop the bars out of the molds and store in a refrigerator or a dry cool spot.

These healthy, homemade candies are a cinch to whip up in large batches.

Enjoy!
